HOW IT STARTED
At 18, bought my first camera. At 19, drove my pickup from here to Arizona, to Florida, to New Hampshire, to home. Taking pictures. My friends were going to Europe, to see the world. I was seeing this country.
On a lark, sent for information from a photography school. Imagine a school that could teach you everything there was to know about photography.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
Graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography, with a Bachelor’s Degree. (Did not learn everything there was to know about photography). The people I went to school with wanted the big glamour jobs, and many of them got those jobs. I wanted to get back to seeing. I wanted to photograph what I was seeing, and I really wanted other people to see these things.

THEN…
I practiced, I explored, and I tried things. I learned that photography should be honest. If you can understand how light describes everything, you do not need tricks and gimmicks. I learned that if you do it right, you can take a subject that people often walk right past, and present it in such a way to stop them in their tracks.
I learned about light. Light is the most stimulating element of life. Without it, we have nothing.

Light is a sensation.

THE PRINTS
All of my personal work is color. To me, the real world is color, and I like reality. The prints are archival because I would like to think that people want to have them around for a while. I only make twelve prints of any image. I hope to find eleven people who like an image enough to own it. I’ll probably keep one for myself.

THE TOOLS
I use a large format camera. Yes, it makes a large piece of film with lots of detail. But much more importantly, it gives so much more control. Of perspective, focus, and absolute control of exposure.
And there is something about the discipline. As long as I am going lug this thing around and set it all up, I might as well take the time to do the best that I can.

I’VE TAUGHT AT:
Elementary schools, Western Washington University, the University of Washington, and the Brooks Institute Photography Workshop Series (where I’ve gotten most of my tuition back), among others.

I’VE SHOWN AT:
Western States Museum, Santa Barbara, CA; Photography West Gallery, Carmel, CA; Equivalents Gallery, Seattle, WA; Silver Image Gallery, Seattle, WA; Washington Centennial Invitational, Tacoma, WA; Whatcom Museum, Bellingham, WA; Scott Milo Gallery, Anacortes, WA; Chaparral Fine Art, Bozeman, MT; Howard/Mandville, Kirkland, WA; Whitebird, Cannon Beach, OR; Stewart Gallery, Boise, ID; among others.

TODAY
I still travel around and see things. What I am really doing is chasing the light. Occasionally, I will stumble upon something at just the right time and make the photograph. But often, I see something and have to go back time and again for the light to be right. Sometimes I just wait. And there are images that I am still waiting for. I have been told it is not supposed to be this much fun.
And I am still learning.
